Warmly, C

March 30, 2021

Dear Apple phone chargers, I loathe you. Why so expensive for a little cord and a plug-in connector that will only last for a short amount of time? That is if I don't lose you before you break.

Dear scooter rides, thanks for giving me and J-man a fun activity to do together. He's got some A+ tricks and I am all for walks in the sunshine.

Dear "Ocean Avenue”, who knew a song from my teenage years (looking at you Laguna Beach) would become the anthem of my kids' lives. Both boys know a majority of the lyrics now. Catchy tune. Nice work.

Dear Toledo Zoo, we are so happy you're back in action. It was a real treat to visit as a fam this past weekend. Favorite animal round-up: monkeys (Jack), polar bears (Mark), birds (Peter), and elephants (my pick).

Dear EnviroCloth, I've got two words for ya-- game changer. Ok, no I cant stop at two words... you have been a hero for all tough stains, quick wipe-ups, and even for a messy bathroom reno. Just a cloth and some water to create a dynamite, chemical-free clean. Shoutout to my gal, Megan Alexander, for the introduction. Want an introduction to this magic cloth, too? Shoot me a message and we will wow your socks off.

Dear Easter, me oh my I love a good holiday. Cant wait for the warm-weather, egg hunts and stealing a candy or two from the boys' baskets. In the meantime were preparing our hearts to celebrate Jesus.

Dear bathroom refreshes, I've dreamt about you for about a year now and, voila, we made it to the other side of completion. Can't wait to share these spaces with ya'll.

Dear Jack + Peter, I will continue to speak “best friend status” over you both. It’s been a blast watching you guys learn how to play together and make each other laugh (and not so fun when you tick-off one another..). Praying you guys will never take for granted the gift it is to have each other.

Banana Bread

March 16, 2021

When I see brown bananas on our kitchen counter I get excited because that means two things: 1) more frozen bananas for smoothies OR 2) were making banana bread. The second option is way more exciting. There's something so comforting about the smell of banana bread in the oven.

This recipe is an adaption from Joanna Gaines. She notes that she uses walnuts only, but her friend claims chocolate chips elevate this bread on another level. And you know what I say? I say go crazy and add both. You'll thank me later.

My recipe makes a whole pan (versus a loaf), so if you're feeling generous you can easily divvy up some squares and package cutely in brown paper and baker's twine.

BANANA BREAD

1 stick unsalted butter, melted
3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
3 to 4 very ripe bananas, mashed (I like to leave them a little chunky)
1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup chopped pecans + 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips
1 to 2 tablespoons granulated sugar

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray an 8 x 8-inch pan with nonstick baking spray.
  2. In a bowl beat together the butter and brown sugar. Next add the eggs and vanilla until well blended. Mash the bananas separately and then add to the mix until combined.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and beat just until combined. Add the pecans and chocolate chips and mix until combined.
  4. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly. Sprinkle the sugar over the top.
  5. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes. Let the bread cool slightly in the pan on a rack. Slice and serve warm.
Enjoy!!

What's in our Easter baskets

March 8, 2021

Unlike last year I am thinking ahead on how we're going to fill the boy's Easter baskets. Since the grandparents do a fab job of stuffing their baskets with candy I am going to put more focus on filling ours with items that we can use in the spring/summer. But, of course, they will get their Reese's eggs from us too (best candy ever).

ONE / TWO (recipe post coming soon!) / THREE / FOUR / FIVE

We are SO ready for warm weather over here so shopping for these items makes me giddy! Our yearly staples are bubbles and sidewalk chalk. Jack is getting a new swim suit this year, and both boys are getting themselves a pair of slip on shoes that are perfect to get messy. Since boy moms don't get to have as much fun with clothes it's a real thrill to find cute accessories like these ball caps with their initials. What I am most excited for is filling some eggs with a batch of homemade play-doh. I am going to include drops of essential oils like lavender, geranium, and lemon. Ah, bring on the smells of spring!!

One of my favorite ways to incorporate the story of Jesus into our Easter basket tradition is putting the baskets in their room the week of Easter. Then we go out and grab a couple rocks from outside and put them in our basket. With each rock we share where we've recently messed up or made bad choices, however we keep this super simple so Jack can try and grasp the idea of sin. Then the night of Easter we secretly take their baskets and fill them up with all the goods, because God's goodness is coming! On Easter morning we have a blast finding our hidden baskets full of fun things. This helps us point to how God takes our brokenness (the rocks) and gave us the greatest gift, Jesus.

We gave this a try for the first time last year since Jack was at an age where he could follow along, but I really think the key to traditions and hoping for kids to know Jesus is consistency. Am I expecting my 4-year-old to grasp sin? Ha, no. But I wonder what this will tradition will do to his heart over time. What questions he'll ask we continue to share.

Here's to hoping your Easter is filled with lots of Reese's eggs and a warmth in your heart knowing you are dearly loved. XO
