#Nowickibooknook Summer Series

August 31, 2020

Friends, we need to take a moment and thank 2020 because it taught me how great fiction books are (!!!!). Nothing like a winter quarantine to teach you how marvelous it is to step outside of your own life and into another's, am-I-right? Don't get me wrong I have always enjoyed reading. My typical go-to's were non-fiction faith, life, and personal-growth type books (with a side of Harry Potter, bc duh).

This past Christmas my mom had gifted me a Kindle and it was not even on my radar. Mom's are the best. They just know. I mean she definitely knew all that would entail in 2020... ;)

Have you heard of online libraries? If not, this will change your life. Just like a library you can search books, request holds, and loan them out to your kindle/phone/reading device. Just happens to be the perfect solution for a library during a pandemic. My favorite part about this online library is that its so convenient and its FREE. All these wonderful books cost me zilch.

My total book count from March to August is 18 books. 18!! Out of those 18 I am here to review my top 6 books from this summer. Let's dive in!

The Tatooist of Auschwitz- Books during World War II have always grasped my attention. I cannot fathom what these prisoner's in concentration camps lived through. This one stays with you once your done reading it. You'll encounter the cruelties of life as a prisoner and witness the tenacity of a man who will do anything to make it out alive with his new reason for existing. Ugh. It's painful. It's beautiful. It's a must read.

After- Anyone watch the movie on Netflix? That's how I landed on this one. I was so ticked that the movie came to abrupt halt with no solid closure. The plot of the movie was all over the place and the details to Hardin and Tessa's love story were so rushed. Somehow I landed on Google searching about the movie and found that it was based on a book series. My heart did a happy dance in that moment. Per usual with a book-turned-movie situation the book was SO MUCH BETTER.
The book is about a college-bound girl, Tessa, who is driven to succeed in all areas of her life until she meets a guy on campus who is going to challenge the way she is wired. This British, B.A. boy gets a wake up call when he realizes the girl he hurts the most is the one he cant imagine living without. Fair warning this book can get a tad rated R. These characters are real and messy. I love them immensely.

In Five Years- This one is so unexpected. It reads so uniquely. The book starts by introducing us to the leading lady who has her life planned out. She's an NYC career climber. She also happens to predict her engagement night. However, she does not predict that she wakes up from a dream to a totally new man, apartment, and life. This book flip-flops from her reality with one man to living another life with a different man. All her type-A ways get challenged as life gets messy. Her BFF goes through a life-altering situation, and some shocking surprises happen along the way that clashes her two worlds: her dream and her real life. This book was a page turner. I had to know what was going to happen in the end.

The Royal We- Anyone else a sucker for a classic royal tale? This book starts off with a look into what will happen at the end of the book but without the context. It's like a reverse cliff hanger; You get a taste of whats ahead so you will devour the beginning with rapid speed. Or maybe that was just me? :)
Bex, an American mid-west girl, travels abroad to England for a study exchange program. It so happens that on the night of her arrival she has an unknowingly, normal encounter with the English Crown Prince, Nicholas. The story unfolds Nick and Bex's relationship and questions if their love can endure their different lifestyles.

Twice In A Blue Moon- This book could easily become a movie! The book starts with the main characters, Sam and Tate, meeting on vacation when they are younger. These two become quickly connected when Tate lets Sam into a massive secret that she is the lost daughter of one of the world's biggest film stars. Trusting the entirety of her hidden life into Sam's hands, she soon realizes she made a huge mistake when she loses her hidden identity and her first love. Fourteen years later, on the set of a big film break for Tate, she is forced to work with the man that betrayed her trust. Could Sam have made a wrong choice for the right reasons? The last chapter had me tearing up. The beauty of forgiveness and redemption. Mmm, loved it.

Carnegie's Maid- I could not put this down once I fell in love with the characters' chemistry. I guess I am sucker for a good love story? But this love story is not typical at all. In fact I was quite dumbfounded by the ending. Except I wouldn't have wanted the book to end in any different way.
A desperate Irish immigrant, Clara, gets very lucky landing a job as a lady's maid at the home of America's leading industrialist, Andrew Carnegie. The bond between these two deepens but is challenged due to the gap between their status'. This book is a historical fiction meaning some facts are true of Andrew Carnegie. All in all this was a good read. Slow at times, but the ending had me glad to have read it.

I'd love to hear: have you read any of these yet? which book are you most intrigued by? what book(s) do I need to read this fall?

Kiddo's Bathroom Update

August 28, 2020

We moved into our home about 3 years ago, and it has been so fun making this space come alive. Mark always questioned why we did not have artwork up on the walls right away, but I was always so hesitant to rush it. When I dream about creating a room I like to ask myself.. what story is being told? what feeling do I want to convey? how can this space serve my family and others?

Jack and Peter's bathroom is plain. The vanity is white, the walls are greige, and the shower curtain is a quick pick up from TJ Maxx. No sentiment whatsoever. Now I am ready for that to all change.

Hello gorgeous green vanity, goodbye boring white. How fun is the paint name "chimchurri"?! Reminds me of good ole' Marry Poppins. A double bonus for a kids bath.

The cute bear art. I saw this and my heart soared with the thought of two little bears, Jack & Peter, on the wall. My talented sister watercolor painted my very own bears, and I am so excited to hang them up!!

Neutral, classic shower curtain that will last as the boys grow from babies to big kids.

Looking to replace our towel bar with these Anthropologie letter hooks. Not a fan of the price, but I have yet to find anything similar in style.

Voila! I am excited to take on this little project and cant wait to share the results.

Peter's First Birthday

August 19, 2020

Oh my stars my baby is no longer a baby. Peter's birthday was so much fun to plan and celebrate.

Mark and I went back and forth on what Peter's middle name should be. We loved the middle name Anthony because it was also Mark's middle name. However, that meant Peter would have the initial P.A.N. Nothing like having your name spell pan. I was so against it at first. I mean he basically shares the name Peter Pan. But not quite. So after much back and forth we decided the sentiment trumped the silliness and Peter Anthony stuck. Best of all, we used that cute name quirk as a loose theme for his party. :)

Homemade cakes are one of my favorite ways to treat my people. Peter's cake was a 3-tier funfetti drip cake. The recipe I adapted from the Baking Fairy was actually for a 4-tiered cake, but I used the 4th tier for Peter's mini smash cake.

If you love anything almond flavor you will love this cake! My personal way of knowing if a cake is going to be amazing or not is by testing out the batter. And let me tell you this batter is 1000% better than the box stuff. I am no professional cake baker, so dont take yourself out of the running if you want to give it a try. It probably tastes even a touch better because of its secret ingredient: your love. ;)

I'd say the cake was a smash.

Recipe for Peter's yummy cake can be found here via the Baking Fairy!

So Glad to Have You!

And we're live!! Welcome friends! This space has brewing in my heart since I started reading blogs in college, and it took me about TEN years until I started taking steps (baby steps, mind you) to make this a fulfilled dream.

A blog can be a dream, eh? This space is so much more than a pretty site with frilly words. The very act of saying yes to this venture is a giant one to me. This is me agreeing that I was created with a voice that should be shared. That I was gifted in creative ways to inspire, encourage, and connect with another. That right there is enough reasons to give myself the green-light. And I hope you know this is true of you, too! Share your gifts, the world is missing out if you keep them to yourself.

Here you will find ways that I create, celebrate, and cultivate different areas in my life. My touch is heart-warming, cozy, and light. Will I keep it real? Of course. I believe vulnerability leads to authentic and meaningful connections. However, I'd be amiss to not convey my Frank Sinatra-jazzing-things-up-in-the-background while sipping-on-a-white-mocha-half-flavor vibe. :)

So, welcome. I am so thrilled to have you. Enjoy the ride right alongside of me.

September Goals

Does anyone else silently squeal inside when September arrives? I used to be team summer as a kid because of my birthday month, but lately I have grown to adore every little bit of the fall season.

Thanks to my Powersheets I have been on a quest to live intentionally with each month of the year.  Coasting through life was not cutting it for me anymore. Setting goals helps me take little steps towards the big picture.

I'm excited to share these on this space with ya'll for you will soon see I am no expert at goal setting. I don't complete everything I set out for. In fact this year in particular has been quite the set back with goals. I am starting to believe that keeping the Nowicki family ship afloat is a GREAT goal in itself for 2020.

Each morning brings a new day so let's press forward.

September goals:

  • Boy's bathroom update
  • Celebrate mom's birthday
  • Finalize planning for fall family vacay
  • Finish reading Dream Big by Bob Goff
  • Launch my site (!!!)
  • Start TIU Mama workout series
  • Enjoy the outdoors with my kiddos
